Over 100 Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge College (HRUC) Higher Education students studying Engineering, Business, and Computing have taken part in an exciting, real-world mini project set by Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The three-day challenge

The three-day challenge brought together students from different disciplines to collaborate on a live industry brief set by AWS, giving them a unique opportunity to apply their skills in a practical, high-pressure environment. Working in mixed teams, students were tasked with developing innovative solutions to a real-world problem inspired by modern data centre operations.

Designing a concept

The project focused on designing a concept for a robotic or drone-based system capable of mapping a data hall, verifying equipment, and monitoring environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. Students were required to combine technical knowledge, business planning, and digital innovation to produce viable and creative proposals.

Cutting-edge ideas

AWS representatives launched the challenge on day one, providing students with valuable industry insight and setting clear expectations. Over the course of the project, students demonstrated strong teamwork, problem-solving ability, and creativity, culminating in final presentations judged by a panel.

The standard of work was exceptionally high, with students showcasing cutting-edge ideas and demonstrating the kind of skills highly valued by employers. Winning teams were recognised for their innovation, practicality, and presentation quality.

The power of employer partnerships

Asif Khan, Assistant Principal at HRUC, said: “This project highlights the power of employer partnerships in bringing learning to life. Our students rose to the challenge, working collaboratively across disciplines to deliver impressive, industry-relevant solutions. We are proud to work with AWS to provide these meaningful experiences that prepare our students for the future workforce.”
