“My favourite thing about studying an apprenticeship is the confidence, being on site, learning new things and proving my ability. Being able to refine the craft whilst getting support, feedback and recognition for my work, that really is the kicker.”
Finding the right path
When Samuel began considering his future, he initially expected to follow a more traditional academic route. During the pandemic, he realised that a more practical, hands-on route would better suit his interests and skills, leading him to pursue a Level 3 Electrical Installation Apprenticeship with Harrow, Richmond and Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC).
“Electrical seemed to be what was probably going to suit me, my interests and my skills more, and also what would probably be the best industry in terms of future growth.”
For Samuel, an apprenticeship offered the opportunity to develop his skills while gaining valuable workplace experience.
“It’s not just bookwork. You’re being paid to do it. There are more incentives. You can establish yourself, in a career, much earlier on than if you just do the conventional education route without the employment along with it.”
Taking his skills to the national stage
With the support of his tutor, David Kilmartin, Samuel was encouraged to enter skills competitions, going on to win the 2026 Greater London Electrical Skills Competition, the 2026 SPARKS Learner of the Year Southeast Regionals, leading him to take home the 2026 SPARKS Learner of the Year National title.
Just one week later, he passed his AM2 assessment, a rigorous, industry-standard practical skills test on his first attempt, achieving an impressive 97% in the applied knowledge section.
“Without David mentoring me and putting me forward for these competitions, I never would have even known they existed or entered them, let alone win them.”
A career full of ambition
Now having completed his apprenticeship, Samuel is progressing his career with a company he has long admired. He plans to gain further qualifications, including his 2391 (Electrical inspection and testing course), and hopes to progress into management in the future.
For Samuel, his apprenticeship has provided the skills, experience and confidence to pursue these goals.
“Everything that I've done throughout my apprenticeship has put me in a position to have a seat at the same table as people that I've looked up to since the start of my apprenticeship.”
We are delighted that Samuel has also agreed to return to the college to share his experiences with new apprentices and encourage future students to take advantage of the opportunities available to them.
