Picking up your GCSE exam results is a nerve-wracking experience. Some students will be celebrating, but others will be wondering what to do if they didn’t get the results they wanted or expected.
There are plenty of options, whatever results you achieved. Here’s a guide if you’re unsure about what to do next.
1. Pause for a moment
If you didn’t get the results you wanted, it can be easy to panic about what you’re going to do next. However, there’s no need to rush your decision. Consider your options, come up with a plan, and decide which route is going to get you to where you want to be.
2. Speak to teachers
If there’s anything you’re unsure of, make sure to ask for help.
Your teachers and career advisors can help you identify your strengths and will be able to advise you on what to do next. They can also advise on whether you can appeal your grade or get your exam paper remarked.
3. Consider other options
There may be courses or qualifications you haven’t considered yet – such as apprenticeships, vocational courses or T-Levels – which could provide the perfect next step.

4. Ask about resits
If you’d like to resit your exams, talk to HRUC’s teachers about the best way to do this. You may be able to resit exams while continuing with the next stage of your studies.
5. Focus on the future
Even if you didn’t get the results you expected, it doesn’t mean your education journey is over.
Exams are important but they don’t define your intelligence or your character.
Everyone goes through setbacks; the important thing is how you respond and carry on. Stay resilient and remember there are still plenty of options for you to pursue.
