Exciting Update to Apprenticeships, Expanding Opportunities for Learners and Employers

An HRUC student and staff member looking at a computer screen, both are wearing glasses. There are students working at computers in the background.

The government has announced significant reforms to apprenticeships, aimed at increasing flexibility for both apprentices and employers, particularly in high-demand sectors such as healthcare, social care, and construction. These changes will make it easier for adult learners to gain qualifications and progress in their careers while supporting businesses in developing a skilled workforce.

One of the most notable updates allows employers to determine whether apprentices aged 19 and over must complete a Level 2 English and Maths qualification (equivalent to GCSE) as part of their apprenticeship. While core English and Maths skills relevant to the job will still be assessed, this change removes unnecessary barriers and enables apprentices to focus on practical, on-the-job learning and career development.

Additionally, the minimum apprenticeship duration will be reduced from 12 months to 8 months, offering a faster pathway to skilled employment. The 278-hour off-the-job training requirement remains in place, ensuring that high-quality learning is maintained while allowing for a more streamlined approach to apprenticeship training.

These reforms are expected to create up to 10,000 additional apprenticeship opportunities each year, breaking down barriers and expanding access for individuals from all backgrounds. At HRUC, our apprentices combine work with study to develop industry-relevant skills and knowledge, making these changes an important step forward in supporting economic growth, bridging skills gaps, and addressing critical workforce demands—particularly in sectors such as housebuilding.

At HRUC, we work closely with businesses to identify and develop apprenticeship opportunities that align with their workforce needs. Having supported thousands of individuals in gaining valuable qualifications and progressing in their careers, we welcome reforms that remove obstacles and enhance flexibility for both learners and employers. HRUC remains committed to building on these apprenticeship developments, ensuring that training continues to meet employer needs and industry standards.

A Harrow Weald Additional Learning Support student smiling at the camera in an orange t-shirt.

We are delighted to confirm that we have enhanced our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision, through the purchase of Barra Hall in Hayes from Hillingdon Council.

The centre will strengthen the quality of our educational services and enable better outcomes for students with special educational needs.

With this acquisition, HRUC is now well positioned to provide a high-quality, inclusive learning environment tailored to the needs of students in Hillingdon and the surrounding boroughs. Serving key areas such as Uxbridge, Hayes, and Hillingdon, this development broadens the reach of our SEND services, and aligns with our strategic goals, including:

  • Enhanced Progression Pathways: We are committed to preparing SEND learners for adulthood and independence. This includes opportunities to progress into other HRUC educational programmes, where appropriate, ensuring that all students have a clear path to success.
  • Empowering Students: Our goal is to support young people with SEND to realise their full potential, becoming active, engaged members of their communities.
  • Increased Capacity: This acquisition allows us to meet both current and future demand for SEND services while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and supporting the local authority's SEND provisions.

Located near the picturesque Barra Hall Park, the former manor house has been vacant since February 2024, after the council switched to a new Hayes Family Hub model. Once final legal agreements are signed, Barra Hall will provide the ideal environment for our staff to support more than 70 SEND students.

Keith Smith, CEO HRUC said "Our mission to create opportunities for all extends to our commitment to learners with Special Educational Needs. Our staff are passionate about supporting students with learning difficulties and disabilities, and we are dedicated to providing individualised support to help each learner reach their full potential. The purchase of Barra Hall will enable us to support even more learners and demonstrates how proud we are to serve and support our students. Together, we are excited to work with the local community to ensure Barra Hall remains at the heart of local services. "
