A former Uxbridge College student who came to the UK as a refugee is now in her final year studying Medicine at one of the UK’s top universities.
Rukhsar Ahmad began her journey at Uxbridge College in 2016, studying English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) before progressing onto GCSEs and then A-Levels.
Now, she is in her final year studying Medicine at King’s College London (KCL) and will graduate in August next year.
Why did you choose to study Medicine?
Rukhsar explained: “I like helping people, that’s how I got into medicine. When I would see people who were sick, I would always try to comfort them and make them feel better.
“Medicine for me is not just a career. I love it.”
How did Uxbridge College help to prepare you for your studies?
Rukhsar said: “All the teachers were great. My favourite teacher was Rupal Parekh. I’m in medical school because she helped me. I’m so proud to know her.”
What are you hoping to achieve in the future?
Rukhsar, who is hoping to move into psychiatry as her career progresses, explained: “Physical medicine involves physical aspects; something you can see, you can easily fix. But psychiatry is really hard because you have to try to fix something you can’t see.”
